Christmas Sew-a-Long: Little House
The Little Christmas Sew-a-Long will feature weekly holiday tutorials from some of my favorite quilty designers! I’m kicking things off with this Little House ornament.
This little house ornament was inspired by one of my son’s current favorite books: Tiny Town! There’s something so sweet and comforting about cozy little houses, and I made this one in a sparkly linen to add some festive feelings. Let’s get started!
This is a great way to use up some scraps, as all the pieces are small! Press all your seams however you like, just make sure to do so as you go. The main block consists of three fabrics. Here’s what you’ll need need:
1. Your first step will be to create two Half Square Triangles for the roof. Stack your E and H squares right side together, then draw a line diagonally on the top one. Stitch a 1/4” seam on each side of the line, then cut along the line. Open the pieces and press to form two HSTs, then trim them down to 1.75”.
2. To create your roof, sew your HSTs together as shown:
3. Next, sew together the following pieces in the following order to create the middle piece of your house with a window and a door.
4. Then, sew the side pieces to the middle piece:
5. Whew! You’ve got a house! Now it needs a roof:
6. Now you can add whatever border pieces you’d like! In my case, I added a background strip (I) to each side of the house and then bottom strip (J) to the bottom. Here’s an in progress shot of the finished block before quilting:
7. Baste and quilt however you want! Add some fun embroidery and hand stitching (I added a tree and outlined the door and window in mine), then bind your quilt. If you’d like your house to be an ornament, add a hanger with embroidery thread.
Enjoy your quick and cute tiny house! Share your work with the tags #littlechristmassewalong to be entered in a drawing to win a fun prize at the end of the sew a long!
