French Seam Tutorial
French seams are one of those sewing skills that seem mysterious at first, but are actually super easy and a great way to class up some of your sewing projects! I especially like using french seams for things like linen bags, where you have easily fraying seams that look best tucked away.
1) Place the WRONG SIDES of pieces A and B together, then stitch with a 1/4” (ish, this in’t quilting) seam.
2) Press to the dark side.
3) Then, fold your top fabric over along the seam, and press again. Now, stitch along this fold line, making sure you are fully encasing the raw seam edges within your new seam. When this step is done, you should have a fully hidden raw edge! Flip your fabric back over so that you are looking at the right sides of the fabric, and press your french seam to the darker fabric.
4) Ok, this is the last seam I promise! Now we’re going to flip this over to the wrong side and tack that seam down.
Ta Da! A beautiful french seam, which looks great from either side.
